Douglas L. Wood, M.D. has served as medical director for the Mayo Clinic Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Center for the Science of Health Care Delivery, Innovation & Design team since 2013 and is a practicing cardiologist at Mayo Clinic. He has previously served as vice-chair, Department of Medicine, and chair, Division of Health Care Policy and Research at Mayo Clinic. Under his leadership, Innovation & Design engages with clinical, research, and educational areas at Mayo Clinic to develop transformational health care practices. Team achievements include assisting in new service lines such as a world-class patient and caregiver experience for CAR T-cell therapy, the implementation of a pregnancy care model that allows low-risk patients to interact with their care teams from home as part of the OB Nest project, and the completion of a clinical genomics application, among other notable work.
Outside of Mayo Clinic, Dr. Wood serves as the current president of the Minnesota Medical Association. He is also a member of the Council of 33 in the Healthcare Innovators Professional Society (HIPS), a distinguished group dedicated to supporting and connecting innovation leaders. Previously, he was a member of the Governor’s Health Care Reform Task Force and has been a leader in health reform in Minnesota. Dr. Wood has held important posts in the American College of Cardiology and the American Medical Association and has been an adviser to the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
